Kermit E. Gastfield Memorial Scholarship
Kermit E. Gastfield, the Chapter's First President and a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of SFPE passed away at the age of 76 on September 20th, 1999. The Chapter awards an annual scholarship in his memory to support fire protection engineering education.
Kerm started his fire protection engineering career with the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau in the Engineering Department on March 1, 1946. He became Chief Engineer in 1957. He continued to progress becoming the Assistant Manager of Engineering in 1975 and the Assistant Manager of Operations in 1984. Kerm retired on August 30, 1988 after 42-1/2 years of service with the bureau. Following his retirement, Kerm continued to work as a part time consultant to the bureau.
Kerm was a dedicated supporter of SFPE and his smiling face was a constant at our meetings. Even after retirement he regularly attended chapter meetings and as always had a big smile on his face. Kerm set a fine example of someone dedicated to their profession and career. We can all learn something from his work ethic and should all be thankful to his devotion to advancing fire protection in the Northwest through his participation in SFPE. He will be fondly missed but his name will be part of our scholarship for many years to come.
